The Basilica

The Basilica is the largest Catholic church in Newfoundland and Labrador Province, with a history of more than 160 years. There is a city clock and nine clocks on the tower of the cathedral, including a Casavant pipe organ and 66 stained glass windows created by Irish, French and British artists in St. John's Church. Among them, the largest Irish arts and crafts window in the mid-20th century outside Ireland is collected. The church was originally built with funding from Irish immigrants, and its structure was designed in the shape of a cross. The walls on both sides of the church are adorned with exquisitely painted glass, and the wooden organ can still make a loud sound. It is said that Pope II sat in the bishop's seat during his visit in 1984.The Basilical is an ancient building, built in 1855, whose twin spires soar high into the sky and cut through the sky,...

Its design marks a revival of classical North American architecture. Inside the church, 65 unique stained glass windows illuminate the extraordinary beauty of the Italianate polychromatic ceiling and gold-leafed lighted areas. On the anniversary of its dedication, Pope Pius VII gave it the name "Cathedral".
