Signal Hill

Signal Hill National Historic Site is the most popular landmark beloved by visitors and locals in St. John’s, which is known for its hiking trails, stunning views, and the iconic Cabot Tower.  Located to the east of St. John's with a panoramic view of the entire city. It stands at an elevation of 116 meters. Steeped in history, Signal Hill was the site of military battles and technological triumphs for its unique geographical location. From the 18th century Anglo French War to World War II, this place had always been the communication center. Several 18th and 19th century cannon ruins are also preserved on the mountain, every year in July and August, simulation performances and drills are held at Signal Hill. It is an excellent time for a cross time dialogue while experiencing the beautiful scenery.

Cabot Tower, an old castle, weathered and war-torn, is located on the highest point of Signal Hill, the symbol of Signal Hill and the city of St. John's. The castle was built between 1898 and 1900 to commemorate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee (50th anniversary of her accession to the throne) and the 400th anniversary of John Cabot's landing in Newfoundland. In addition, it was here that Marconi received the world's first transatlantic radio signal on December 12, 1901.

I was in awe of the memories of history as I caressed the stone walls of Cabot Castle and gazed out over the magnificent Atlantic Ocean and the colorful harbor town of St. John's.
