Brigus & Cupids

  Brigus is a small fishing community located in Conception Bay being a secluded bay and it was once the home and strategic location of many fishermen in its early days. Its history can be traced back to around 1612 and was mainly settled by people from England, Ireland, and Wales. The town retains intact old-fashioned buildings and rustic stone walls, with lush gardens and winding paths complementing each other. The ubiquitous symbols of sailboats, fish, and harpoons are the characteristics of this town. Cupids was the first English colony in Canada. In 1610, John Guy led 38 hardworking, brave and kind-hearted colonists to land in Copper's Cove, which was later called Cupid. The colonizers cleared the land, grew food, raised livestock Around 1700, settlers abandoned their original plantation and the secret of its exact location disappeared for over 250 years. Today, when visiting the provincial historical site of Cupid Bay Plantation, we can see its secret Revealed by archaeologists. Here you can watch Shakespeare's traditional and playful performances, and the Perchance Theatre was modelled after Shakespeare's famous open-air Globe theatre in London.
