Hawthorn Cottage National Historic Site
Hawthorne Cottage, also known as Hawthorne Cottage National Historic Site of Canada, is a example of the cottage orné Picturesque style, which flourished in Newfoundland at the end of the 18th and 19th centuries. This small house was built in 1830 and features double hung windows, with the wooden horizontal siding under a low, hip-roof. Hawthorne House is the former residence of Bob Bartlett, a famous navigator in the Arctic Circle. This small house is also a building with Newfoundland characteristics, and there are some Bartlett sailing crafts and souvenirs inside. The cottage itself has a rich and diverse history, and its architecture is recognized as a model of 19th century merchant residences. It has a history of over 170 years, and as Bartlett's fame grew, this house received many visitors.
