Bonavista

Bonavista is believed to be the place where Italian sailor Giovanni Caboto first set foot in America in 1497. It is believed that Caboto cried out "O Buono vista!" after seeing the rugged coastline for the first time, and the lovely village derives its name from him. From the top of the city's 19th century lighthouse, visitors can see the 10,000-year-old glaciers drifting in the sea off the coastline. Here you can admire the brightly colored Cape Bonavista Lighthouse, the Bonavista Archives and the unique heart-shaped sea caves.
