Auk Island Winery, Gander

The name of the Auk lsland winery is a tribute to the great birds - the original penguins - that became extinct in 1844 and were found around Our Lady's Bay and the Fink Islands. The winery is owned by Grant Young, who acquired the winery formerly known as Weir Winery Ltd. The main label of the Isle of Oak Winery is Notre Dame Wines. The Isle of Oak Distillery is located in the former Durrell College in Durrell Arm, South Twillinger Island. The school was built in 1952 and hundreds of children passed through its doors before it closed in 1991 and many fond memories and lifelong friendships were forged. A unique feature of the winery is the use of iceberg water to make the wine, based on natural wild berries, which are hand-picked by local people and delivered directly to the winery, making the wine here unique and mellow....
